The Story Behind The Door: Fictional reverse poem
They are wrong.
Our family is perfect,
Long before people can say
There is a problem.
Nobody will admit that
They have it worse.
Shattered glass and dented walls
That’s not here to show
There is something
Making the house more welcoming
There’s no visible violence
Doors slam shut
At the end of the day
That’s not what we do
Happy smiles and safety
Is what we are.
Being rude and violent
It’s completely out of character
We are nice. But
They let some qualities slip.
And things need to change.
Our family seems damaged
Some people will say
That is a lie.
This is not the truth,
Society can see.

I thought I’d bite the bullet and give my blog some rhythm. This talks about the mask we place as society on topics such as domestic violence and the perception of ‘togetherness’ within families and relationships. The idea to write this came after watching one of many police related programmes.
I’ve not written a poem since, well, the last time I was required to for educational purposes. Let alone attempting to write a reverse poem.
I would appreciate comments and feedback on this. Let me know what you think of it in the comments!
Fyza.
I have always been in awe of reverse poems and this clearly leaves an impact! Great job!

This is great. I would love to have the ability to write a reverse poem. It must have taken a lot of rough drafts. Very creative

It only took two. I sat and edited and re-read it a thousand times. I thought of the idea last minute and rushed it! I’d like to try again but next time, really work on it. It’s challenging but fun. Go for it! I would love to read yours.

This is the first time I have ever read a reverse poem. It is very creative and interesting on how the words can describe so much in two different ways. There are many people out there who don’t realize all the domestic violence out there. Thank you for taking the risk and trying something new in a very creative way.

Oh, thank you! I had seen a reverse poem on the internet (there are very few) and I kind of wanted to give it a go. So I did. Unfortunately that’s often the case with domestics. They’re usually very discreet and hushed. Thank you for reading 🙂

Thank you very much! I wouldn’t say it’s great work, rather doubting the quality now. But for a first attempt, it’ll pass I guess 🙂

This is quite creative and at the same time sadly disturbing. Unfortunately, many people “keep up appearances” while they destroy others and are in turn, destroyed by others. This poem reminds me of the late 80s song by pop folk singer/song writer Suzanne Vega, entitled “Luca”. You can check it out here: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=VZt7J0iaUD0

Sorry I touched the send button by mistake so I will continue now. The poem talks about both the worlds that the doors separate. I really liked your poem and I am eager to see more of your poems in the future. Thank you for sharing this.
